Dar al-Bahr

Dar al-Bahr was never meant to be restored so much as outlived. The house has been in the same family for five generations, and every generation has added, removed, or quietly repurposed a piece of it. By the time we were invited in, the building was less a house than a layered record of its own compromises.

It sits inside the warren of the Muttrah quarter, close enough to the corniche that the sea is audible at high tide. The plan is the classic Omani townhouse — a narrow street front, a sequence of rooms climbing away from the courtyard, and a badgir catching whatever the coast breeze offers.

The approach has been to uncover rather than add. False ceilings came down to reveal the original mangrove-pole and palm-leaf roof structure. Modern cement renders were removed from the courtyard walls to expose the coral-limestone masonry beneath, much of it still sound after two centuries. The carved teak screens — shutters, railings, doors — are being cleaned and re-fixed in their original positions.

The work is slow on purpose. Each room is assessed on its own before any decision is made, and the family has been part of every one. A house this old should not be finished quickly.

When it is done, Dar al-Bahr will be what it mostly already was — a merchant house of the Indian Ocean, still doing business with the sea.
